Research Assistant – UBC

The UBC’s Center for Community-Engaged Learning (CCEL) is looking for a Research Assistant (RA) to work with our office and to help the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences conduct a program evaluation of their new first year Community Service Learning (CSL) program. Through CSL, this new course introduces 1st year pharmacy students to the social determinants of health and the importance of understanding the social contexts of patients as future health care professionals to provide patient-centered care.

Role description: Reporting directly to the Centre for Community Engaged Learning, working with CCEL staff while also working closely with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences course instructor. The successful candidate will take an active role in all stages of the evaluation of the 1st year CSL course for the purpose of its further development. The role will require a high degree of collaboration with various stakeholders as well as the ability to work independently within a given set of work parameters, to contribute to the design of an evaluation plan and move it forward.

Role duties: The design and implementation of a program evaluation plan, including:

  • Tool development and data collection, such as interviews, surveys, and focus groups with multiple stakeholders (students, administration, community organizations, and staff)
  • Data analysis, both qualitative and quantitative
  • Completing write-ups and reports for internal use and future course development, including lessons learned, next steps/recommendations and information sheets, and the potential to publish in relevant academic channels.
  • The successful candidate will participate in regular meetings with Pharmacy and CCEL staff. During these meetings the team will discuss the current state of evaluation, and collaboratively define the necessary next steps.

Role requirements: Currently pursuing a graduate degree in a relevant discipline within the sciences or social sciences (Education, Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, Pharmacy education, etc), Familiarity with Social Determinants of Health, Previous experience with program evaluation is required, Previous experience with quantitative and/or qualitative methods, Previous experience working with community organizations an asset, Familiarity with community service-learning is an asset.
