At the graduate level at UBC, tuition fees are based on fee payment schedules (Schedule A for Full-time or Schedule B for Part-time), rather than on the number of credits in which a student registers.
Full-time tuition fees (Schedule A)
Graduate students on the Full-time Fee (Schedule A) are required to pay a minimum of 1 year's tuition, at 3 installments per year (3 installments in total). Research your specific program costs and the installment schedule to learn about tuition and other student fees. Students must pay the same tuition installment amount irrespective of how many courses they take in any given term.
The fact that, generally, credit load does not affect tuition fees is an important point to keep in mind. Students must pay the same tuition installment amount (whether Schedule A or Schedule B), irrespective of how many courses they take in any given term. Also, if students finish their program requirements prior to making their minimum number of fee installments, they will not be permitted to graduate until the minimum number of installments are paid in full.
Part-time tuition fees (Schedule B)
Graduate students on the Part-time Fee (Schedule B) are required to pay a minimum of three year's tuition, at 3 installments per year (9 installments in total). Research your specific program costs and the installment schedule to learn about tuition and other student fees. Students must pay the same tuition installment amount irrespective of how many courses they take in any given term.
Student Fees
In addition to tuition fees, graduate students are also required to pay standard student fees (irrespective of credit load) and graduation fees. Students on program extension and leaves-of-absence will also be required to pay additional fees. For an overview of graduate tuition and student fees, please visit the Graduate Tuition and Student Fees web page.
All newly admitted graduate students are automatically assessed the Schedule A (full-time) fee payment schedule.
Switching to part-time status (Master's students)
Students who are planning to take a Master's degree on a part-time basis must obtain approval from their unit's Graduate Advisor and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies prior to the beginning of the first term of the program (i.e. prior to the commencement of the degree program) in which fees are first assessed. The form for switching from Schedule A (full-time) to Schedule B (part-time) status is located on the Faculty of and Postdoctoral Graduate Studies' Faculty of and Postdoctoral Graduate Studies' Forms for Students web page. In addition, students who pay tuition fees according to Schedule B (part-time) are not permitted to revert back to Schedule A (full-time) after the initial payment of the tuition fees in the first term of the program.
Doctoral Students' Status
While Master's students have the option of switching from the full-time to the part-time tuition fee payment schedule, there is no part-time option for doctoral students. Doctoral students are only assessed the full-time fee payment schedule.
Doctoral students at UBC are required to finish their program within six years. Doctoral students taking longer than six years to finish their degrees are required to withdraw from their programs, unless they apply in advance for a 1-year program extension (extension fees apply).
Master's students at UBC are required to finish their degree within five years from their program start date.
