In line with the UBC Plan: Place and Promise, one of the Faculty of Education’s goals is to “expand recruitment of highly competitive Postdoctoral Fellows and provide enhanced support and mentorship for their scholarly and professional development.” Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) are already a growing segment of the Faculty of Education’s research landscape but there is still a lot we can do to integrate PDFs into faculty life. Both PDFs and faculty members can benefit immensely from this mentorship opportunity given that postdoctoral researchers:
- Are qualified junior researchers who typically begin their appointments within three years of obtaining their PhDs and are transitioning from graduate school to becoming established scholars in their fields.
- Are seeking additional training in a particular area of research and benefit from mentoring and role modeling, rather than from direct supervision.
- Are expected to actively engage in conducting and disseminating research either on a part-time or full time basis.
