Graduate Academic Assistant, International Graduate Student Support

Function

To lead, organize, and promote academic and social support for international graduate students in the Faculty of Education.

Working Relationships

The successful applicant will work with international graduate students; the Senior Associate Dean, International and Administration; Professional Development and Community Engagement; the Manager, OGPR, department graduate advisors and graduate program assistants; and professors emeriti.

Work Performed

  • Plan, implement and evaluate in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean, International and Administration (or his designate) and the Manager, OGPR, the annual program of activities for international students;
  • Initiate activities for supporting international students’ academic growth and integration to help international students understand the UBC and Canadian academic structures;
  • Identify and refer students to other UBC and local community resources of particular value to international students;
  • Maintain a communication network with each of the departments and between and among international students;
  • Create and assist in maintaining contact lists, listservs, webpage, blog, etc.;
  • Organize meetings, orientation events, social events, and workshops;
  • Assist in identifying and maintaining a database of international alumni;
  • Hold membership on the Graduate Student Council of the Faculty of Education (GSFE) representing international graduate student interests;
  • Attend meetings to liaise with other support units in the Faculty of  Education, the Graduate Student Council of the Faculty of Education (GSFE) and elsewhere on campus;
  • Other relevant tasks related to serving international students in the Faculty of Education.

Exercising Leadership and Sensitivity

The applicant must be able to work independently and demonstrate awareness of the broad issues affecting international students. Applicant should know the Faculty and campus services available to make referrals when necessary.

Supervision

The Senior Associate Dean, International and Administration (or his designate) has direct oversight of this position. Also works in collaboration with the Manager, OGPR.

Working Conditions

The position is located in the Office of Graduate Programs and Research, Scarfe 309. The term of employment is from August 25, 2014 – December 25, 2014. Pay is $3,992.50/per period for Doctoral and $3,842.00/per period for Masters’ level students. The position is part-time and will average 10 hours per week. Specific hours of work to be negotiated.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be an international graduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Education (unless applicant pool warrants an exception).
  •  Sensitive to international students’ needs and concerns; active interest in the development of services and support system;
  • Ability to get things done in a reliable & competent manner;
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment;
  • Familiarity with student societies and campus services;
  • Have related knowledge of program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Experience with WordPress would be helpful
