2014-2015 Researcher Pro-D Series Session with Dr. Anthony Paré

Writing persuasive proposals: A conversation about selling your research

When: April 22nd, 2015 12:00 to 1:30 pm
Where: Neville Scarfe 308A, 2125 Main Mall
Note: RSVP – Open only to Education faculty members

Researchers need to answer some basic questions when drafting grant proposals: what is the purpose of the proposal? who will read it? what attitudes and values will readers bring to their reading? how does the researcher want to affect the readers?

In this session, we will consider the grant proposal as a rhetorical challenge; that is, we will explore the work that proposals must do in order to influence readers, and we will discuss the qualities and tactics that make a proposal successful. We will jump start the conversation by doing a little writing, and we will look at some sample SSHRC proposals.

Dr. Anthony Paré has studied and taught academic and professional writing for over 30 years. He has also served on a number of SSHRC panels. He will lead the discussion, but please come ready to share your ideas and experiences.
