Pay rate: $22.89 to $27.47 per hour, depending on experience
Hours per week: 10 to 20

The UBC-Community Learning Initiative is looking for a research assistant (RA) to work with the Manager of Community Based Experiential Learning and Environmental Science faculty members to help support the continued development and evaluation of a 400 level Environmental Science community project capstone course.
Background:
Community-based experiential learning (CBEL) is a pedagogical approach in which students apply their academic learning while working with community-based partners to address community-identified priorities. CBEL enhances students’ academic learning and their capacity for global citizenship, while strengthening civil society and advancing sustainability. CBEL is one of the enriched educational experiences that are highlighted in UBC’s Place and Promise strategic plan.
Role:
The RA will work directly with the Manager of Community Based Experiential Learning at the UBC- CLI, the CBEL Officer for Applied Science and ENVSC faculty members. The RA will be an active participant in the on-going research/evaluation/development of a 400 level ENVSC community project capstone course.
Duties:
The RA may be asked to assist in all stages of the course development/research/evaluation:
– Data collection/analysis such as interviews, surveys, focus groups with stakeholders
– Write-ups for internal use within the UBC-CLI: including lessons learned, next steps, information sheets
– Maintaining a list of potential and active community partners for the course
– Assist in framing the community partner role and scope of student projects
– Assist in the development of the curriculum framework informed by CBEL resources
– Assist in the development of reflection tools and resources
The RA will participate in weekly research meetings. During these meetings the team will discuss the current state of research project(s), and collaboratively define the necessary next steps for the coming week.
Qualifications:
1. Currently pursuing a graduate degree in a relevant discipline (Education, Environmental Science).
2. Previous experience with Adult /higher education an asset.
3. Previous experience working on a research project an asset.
4. Previous experience working with community an asset.
5. Previous experience with qualitative data analysis an asset.
All of the UBC-CLI’s work includes an aspect of community engagement; having a methodological understanding of community-university relationships is therefore, an asset.
