Internal Call for Nominations: UBC Distinguished University Scholars

Value: One-time research support in the amount of $20,000, plus a stipend of $20,000 per year for five years

Description: UBC has opened its call for nominations to the Distinguished University Scholars (DUS) program. Distinguished University Scholars are faculty members who have distinguished themselves as exceptional scholars in research and/or teaching and learning. The Faculty of Education, Vancouver, has been invited to submit a maximum of two nominations in this round and up to 10 new Distinguished University Scholars will be named across UBC in 2025. Nomination dossiers for internally (Faculty) selected nominees are due to the Provost Office September 25.

Please find below the Faculty of Education’s internal nomination process. This is a two-phase process designed to ensure equity of opportunity to apply to the program.

Phase 1 will be an open call for nominations (including self-nominations) followed by an adjudication within the Faculty to select up to 2 nominees for the University-wide competition.

Phase 2 will be to support nominees selected during Phase 1 to prepare their files for the University-wide competition.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Nominations are based on an assessment of the quality of the nominee’s work and proposed scholarly program.  Nominations will be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Distinguished University Scholars should be outstanding and innovative scholars whose accomplishments have had a significant impact in the field.
  • Distinguished University Scholars should have received international recognition as leaders in the field.
  • A Distinguished University Scholar’s record in attracting and supervising a diversity of students and trainees should be exemplary, taking into account the practices and standards of the field.
  • A Distinguished University Scholar’s proposed scholarly program should be innovative, original and of high quality.
  • Distinguished University Scholars’ work should be at the level of scholarly excellence demonstrated by Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs and similar distinguished faculty.
  • To the extent possible in their field, a Distinguished University Scholar and their scholarly program have demonstrated efforts to model equitable and inclusive research activities (e.g., across research design, community engagement, research team composition, research team competency and culture, research environment and climate, highly-qualified personnel and early-career researcher development, and knowledge translation.

TIMELINE

PHASE 1

By Monday June 9: 

Nominees/nominators email the following documents to educ.ore@ubc.ca:

  1. A short description (1 page preferred; maximum 2 pages) prepared by the nominee describing in general terms their current work and scholarly plans for the next five years. The document should be written in language that can be understood by non-experts in the field, if possible.
  2. An updated UBC CV.
  3. Results of this internal adjudication will be made known to applicants before the end of June.

 

PHASE 2

Early July

Internally selected nominee(s) will be contacted by ORE and a plan for contacting referees and developing nomination dossiers over the summer will be communicated at that time.

Wednesday September 2

Deadline to submit full nomination dossiers to ORE

Friday September 25

Deadline to submit nomination dossiers to the Provost Office.
