Description: The Government of Canada has launched an open selection process to fill vacancies for the Governing Council of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

NSERC is a federal research funding agency that aims to make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. NSERC invests over $1.2 billion each year in natural sciences and engineering research and research talent development in Canada. Its investments deliver discoveries, and also enable partnerships and collaborations that connect industry with discoveries and the researchers behind them. Researcher-industry partnerships supported by NSERC help advance research and development, solve scale-up challenges, and mitigate the risks of developing new technologies.

The membership of NSERC’s Governing Council consists of the President and up to 18 other members from the academic, not-for-profit, public and private sectors appointed by the Governor in Council (GIC), on the recommendation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.Council members are responsible for promoting and assisting research in the natural sciences and engineering, and advising the Minister on such matters. Members also advise the President on strategy and high level policies for NSERC, and review and evaluate performance. The Council works to ensure that public funds are allocated in a manner that maximizes research outcomes to enable a strong, vibrant research community in the natural sciences and engineering and achieve the greatest strategic impact for Canada.

Since 2016, the Government of Canada has applied a rigorous approach to GIC appointments built on open, transparent, and merit‑based selection processes. This approach reflects the fundamental role that Canadians play in our democracy and is aimed at attracting highly qualified and diverse candidates to reflect Canada’s skilled and diverse population.

The Government of Canada’s 50 – 30 Challenge encourages Canadian organizations to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within their workplace by striving for 50% gender parity and 30% diversity on their boards. We believe that upholding the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion on boards benefits organizations and the country. As such, we encourage individuals from all regions of the country who reflect the many facets of our population to consider contributing to the work of NSERC as a member of Governing Council. In order to achieve the 50 – 30 Challenge, preference may be given to applicants who are members of one or more of the following groups: women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, and members of a visible minority group.

In addition, the Government of Canada encourages applications from graduate students and early-career researchers, who are an important part of the community served by NSERC.

More information on the new GIC appointment policy, NSERC, and its member selection process can be found on the GIC appointments website. Interested candidates must apply online by March 20, 2024.
