Note: SSHRC has informed UBC that the forms will not be available until late November, but the forms remain largely unchanged from last year.
Value: $7,000 to $75,000 over 1-2 years.
Objectives: Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. For Emerging Scholars, this supports pursuing new research questions and approaches. For Established Scholars this supports exploration of new research questions and methodologies that are distinctly different from previous research.
These grants fund projects that meet the goals of the Insight Program:
• build knowledge and understanding from disciplinary, interdisciplinary and/or cross-sector perspectives;
• new approaches to research on complex and important topics;
• provide a high-quality research training experience for students;
• expertise that relates to societal challenges and opportunities; and
• mobilize research knowledge, to and from academic and non-academic audiences.
Proposed projects may involve, but are not limited to, the following types of research activities:
• case studies, pilot initiatives and critical analyses of existing research.
Projects may also involve national and international research collaboration, and the exploration of new ways of producing, structuring and mobilizing knowledge within and across disciplines and sectors.

SSHRC has developed a new online application portal called the Research Portal and the IDGs are the first SSHRC program to use the new system.
Applicants must submit an online application, as well as a Canadian Common CV. Co-Applicants must submit a Canadian Common CV, but Collaborators do not (new this year).
Please allow a generous amount of time to complete your and your team member’s CCVs (80-100 hours each, from scratch).
Requests for equipment must follow SSHRC’s new Guidelines for Support of Tools.
