Congratulations to Dr. Ryuko Kubota!

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ryuko Kubota, Professor in LLED, for being awarded a 2021 UBC Killam Faculty Research Prize in the Arts and Humanities, Senior Researcher category. Established in 1986, the UBC Killam Faculty Research Prize is awarded in recognition of distinguished research and scholarly contributions of international significance. A well-established scholar in the field of applied linguistics, Dr. Kubota has made significant scholarly contributions in the areas of second/foreign language teaching and learning, critical approaches to culture in language education, and critical, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing approaches to applied linguistics and language pedagogy. Her outstanding body of work includes pioneering research on the cultural differences in rhetorical structures of written text, research on cultural essentialism in language education, and more recently research on neoliberal ideologies that prioritize English as an international language for individuals in transnational work contexts.
