Congratulations to Dr. Candace Galla!

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Candace Galla, Associate Professor in LLED, for being awarded a 2021 UBC Killam Faculty Research Fellowship. The fellowships are designed to support promising UBC researchers in undertaking a research project during a period of study leave. During her leave, Dr. Galla will document linguistic and cultural stories of Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) and their descendants who reside in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) – Oregon, Washington, British Columbia – who also have ancestral and genealogical ties to Hawaiʻi dating back to the 19th century and earlier. She will seek to better understand the complexities of lived relations, identities, experiences, histories, and current realities of Kānaka Maoli and their descendants in the PNW, as well as learn about their blending of Hawaiian language and cultural exchanges, choices, and practices with local Indigenous communities.
