Congratulations to Dr. John Kramer (KIN) for receiving a grant from Wings For Life!
The central hypothesis of this project is that early administration of anticonvulsants (i.e., pregabalin and gabapentin) will improve neurological recovery in humans after acute spinal cord injury in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Dr. Kramer proposes that medication given for pain early after injury might impact how people recover, and is following up on preliminary findings that anticonvulsants have a beneficial effect. If he confirms a beneficial effect, the next step will be to trialĀ anticonvulsants in a clinical trial. This trail could be conducted relatively quickly and safely because anticonvulsants are already used in standard practice.
