Graduate Student Presentations: Current Research in Early Childhood with Keynote Speaker

In this annual event, graduate students in the area of early education share their graduating projects or theses about current research topics in early childhood education. Each presentation acts as an opportunity for knowledge mobilization as well as a point of departure for a dialogue and community engagement.

This event will begin with a keynote presentation titled:
Toward Multimodal Approaches to Transcultural Literacy Learning: Young Children’s Textual Re/production in Private Spaces by Dr. Marianne McTavish, Senior Instructor, Department of Language and Literacy Education, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia, followed by students’ presentations.

WHEN:  Thursday, April 28, 2016
TIME:  4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: 2125 Main Mall, Neville Scarfe Bldg. Room 310

Drawing on data from a larger multiple case study, Dr. McTavish will focus on a young bilingual child from a lower socioeconomic community as he re/produced texts in playful, multimodal ways in spaces he considered private and highly personal. Framed by theories of multimodality and embodiment, Dr. McTavish will demonstrate how, in these private spaces, this child blended senses, emotions, and materiality to bring new identities to the foreground. She argues that children are competent managers of, and producers in, these spaces in ways that disrupt adult notions of literacy and making meaning.
