Value & Duration: A flexible infrastructure budget of $15,000; One year. While the appointment as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence is for 12 months, one remains an Institute Associate indefinitely. A private office in the Institute (for use as their main research office for the 12 months of their appointment) and access to Institute facilities located in a dedicated scholars’ area on the top floor of the University Centre, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Scholars’ offices are fully equipped with voice-mail, a computer, standard software and connection to a network printer. Specific funding allowances may be viewed on the program’s website. Scholars in Residence become permanent Faculty Associates of the Institute and receive invitations to all Institute events.

Objectives: The Peter Wall Distinguished Scholars in Residence program is directed at tenure-track Full Professors and senior Associate Professors located at UBC-Vancouver. Emeriti may also apply. Recipients of a past appointment are eligible to apply again after five years of completing their term. Up to six one-year appointments of outstanding senior UBC scholars are made each year. The selection of scholars is based on recognized research excellence in line with the mandate of the Institute, in particular being oriented to basic research and being interdisciplinary. Distinction is a necessary but not sufficient condition for selection; Wall Scholars should demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinarity and a genuine interest in taking full advantage of a year at the Institute. A proposal for research and activities (or the planning thereof) while at the Institute should be included in the letter of application. While at the Institute scholars present a talk on their research, participate in a two-day research retreat, and meet together for a few hours on a weekly basis. At the Institute, a Wall Scholar is able to be at the centre of intellectual activities and interdisciplinary discussions at UBC and, at the same time, to find a quiet haven for research and reflection.
