Value: The Killam Research Fellowship is a salary replacement program that provides research release time and is valued at $70,000 per year for a two-year period.

Objectives: The purpose of a Killam Research Fellowship is to provide release time from teaching and administrative duties to an individual scholar who wishes to pursue independent research. Whenever possible, the research should be conducted within a university or research institute that has given an adequate indication of its interest in the applicant’s project and its willingness to provide basic facilities and other forms of assistance.
If the scholar is a Canadian citizen, the award may be used for research in Canada and elsewhere. Fellowships granted to applicants who are permanent residents may be used only in Canada.

Application deadline(s):

  • May 12: 10:00 AM OGPR for requisite Faculty-level administrative review and Faculty signature.
  • May 13: 4:30 PM ORS for the institutional signature and e-submission.
  • May 15: Canada Council.

Special notes: Applicants wishing to apply for release time must receive Faculty approval through the Faculty’s Release Time for Research process prior to submission. The application requires a Canadian Common CV. Final submission is done electronically by UBC ORS.
