Connection Grants

Sponsor: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Application deadlines:

  • Monday July 20th: OGPR internal review and feedback (optional). Email Robert Olaj a PDF of your proposal.
  • Noon Wednesday July 29th: OGPR internal signature deadline. Email Robert Olaj a PDF of the proposal with a completed, signed and scanned ORS Research Project Information Form.
  • Thursday July 30th: Robert Olaj in the OGPR will email your PDF application and signed RPIF to ORS on your behalf.
  • Monday August 3rd: SSHRC national deadline (next subsequent round Nov. 1).

Special notes: Note: August 3 is B.C. Day but it is not a national (i.e. SSHRC) holiday.


Additional support in the form of cash and /or in kind contributions (excluding registration fees) equivalent to a minimum of 50 per cent of the amount requested from SSHRC must come from other sources, such as sponsors. Applicants/project directors or Co-Applicants on any project funded through a SSHRC Connection Grant that is still active are not eligible to apply for an individual Connection Grant. Co-Applicants for Connections Grants (only) may be from non-academic organizations.

  • Aug 24: OGPR IR (Optional). Email full draft for OGPR IR to Robert Olaj (for those not participating in SPARC IR).
  • Aug 30: Receive SPARC IR reviewer feedback.
  • Sept 8: OGPR Insight Intensive workshop: Working on summary & budget in groups.
  • Sept 23: Receive OGPR IR feedback.
  • 10:00 a.m. Oct 8: Submit application and completed RPIF to Robert Olaj in the OGPR for Faculty-level signature (all faculty, except those in KIN) and for administrative review only (completeness, signatures and budget commitments).
  • 4:00 p.m. Oct 9: UBC ORS deadline for you to hit “Submit” online and for the OGPR to provide UBC/ORS with your completed RPIF and a copy of your proposal

Special notes:

  • A Notice of Intent stage has been eliminated. Canadian Common CV will not be used for this competition. Collaborators will receive an invitation to complete a “profile” (not a whole SSHRC CV). Projects must fall under SSHRC’s Subject Matter Eligibility Guidelines. A reminder that applicants who applied to the 2015 Insight Development Grants are not eligible for the fall 2015 Insight Grants competition, irrespective of the outcomes of the IDG competition.

Midcareer Grant Program

Partnership Development Grants

  • Oct 14: Email Dawn Whitworth at SPARC indicating desire for SPARC internal review (SPARC IR is optional).
  • Oct 16: Email Beth Haverkamp, with copy to Heather Frost, the draft of your proposal (including full budget) and a completed Faculty Partnership Information Questionnaire.
  • Oct 21: Email Dawn Whitworth at SPARC a 1 pg. summary of your project (SPARC IR optional).
  • Oct 28: Email Dawn Whitworth at SPARC your full proposal draft for internal review (SPARC IR optional).
  • Nov 25: OGPR deadline for faculty-level signature. Email Heather Frost a copy of your application and completed RPIF.
  • Nov 26: UBC/ORS RPIF and application submission deadline.

Special notes:

  • Applicants are advised to start working with their Partners in the summer, as the process of negotiating objectives, how the Partner organizations will participate (i.e. what they will do), and of what their cash or in-kind contributions will consist takes a significant amount of time. Projects must fall under SSHRC’s Subject Matter Eligibility Guidelines.
